Having nearly completed an in-depth environmental impact study it began in 2007, USDA has proposed that Roundup Ready alfalfa be made available to farmers. USDA scientists have preliminarily concluded that Roundup Ready alfalfa will not result in significant impact on the environment.
Now, USDA invites the public to comment on the draft environmental study and the implications of returning Roundup Ready alfalfa to the marketplace. It began accepting public comments posted to a special Web site on Dec. 18. The public comment period will last sixty days.
If USDA's preliminary recommendation is finalized, Roundup Ready alfalfa could finally return to market this year, but not without your help. You have until February 16 to voice your opinion and recruit customers to tell USDA why Roundup Ready alfalfa is vital to the livelihood of America's forage and dairy producers. By dedicating just one day to this initiative, you can help ensure an informed decision is made.
It is important to note that in earlier phases of this process, opponents to Roundup Ready alfalfa, including many non-farmers, far outnumbered advocates in making their voices heard.
Prepare your comment
Take a moment to consider the many benefits of Roundup Ready alfalfa listed below in the Benefits of Roundup Ready Alfalfa section.
Using a program such as Microsoft Word, write a brief (one to three paragraphs) statement about why you personally believe Roundup Ready alfalfa should be allowed to return to market.
For assistance preparing a comment, go to RoundupReadyAlfalfa.comand click on Send Letter of Support.
Scroll to the end of the page and click on Submit. Your comment will not be counted until you click the Submit button.
The decision on Roundup Ready alfalfa could have an impact on the availability of future technologies in other crops. Therefore, it is important for USDA to know the value that technologies such as Roundup Ready alfalfa provide to farmers. USDA is likely to categorize comments by topic, so the more topics, the more reasons Roundup Ready alfalfa is a good thing for America's forage and dairy farmers. Timing Is Critical
The window to make your voice heard in support of Roundup Ready alfalfa will only last for 60 days. On February 16, the comment period will close. USDA will then carefully review all comments and determine if Roundup Ready alfalfa should return to market. As a member of the agricultural community, it is vital for your comments to be included in the decision-making process.
